The Movie:
The family is turned upside down when Nan’s (Fionnula Flanagan) unemployed slacker son Colm (Pat Shortt), and his niece Emma (Kelly Thornton) make a well-intended attempt to clean out her house and accidentally trash the mattress where she’s been stashing her life savings. Now they must overcome their many differences to lead their family in a race against time to find a lost fortune.
Indie comedies can be hit or miss sometimes so I can admit that I was kind of apprehensive about it but within the first 10 minutes I had made my decision. It was setup perfectly with the way that the mattress was thrown out accidentally and with the unfortunate events that followed created a balance between comedy and drama. The story itself was probably one of the worst things that could happen to a person but in a sense it brought kind of brought everyone together as a family, the only thing was that it was for the wrong reasons……money. Little by little you see the true intentions of most of the family members, especially the son. Even with that bit of negativity though the film does manage to have a lot of heart in it as well. Emma tries to go out of her way for practically the entire film to make sure that Nan isn’t being ignored or made a fool of and it’s in those moments that you see some really heartfelt scenes. Probably one of my favorite and funniest moments in the film has to do with winning the lottery. You can possibly guess what it is but the whole exchange between the people involved was so hilarious to me. From beginning to end this is a fantastic little indie comedy that will have you engaged and wanting to find out how it all is going to end. This is a definite watch.
