The Movie:

In Texas, years before the events of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriff’s daughter dead. Ten years later, the Sawyer teen kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with three other inmates. Pursued by authorities including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter’s death, Sawyer goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster now known as Leatherface.

I love horror and there isn’t anything more horror than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I’ve seen every TCM movie that has been made so there was no doubt that I was going to see this one too. The story grabbed me right away because it wasn’t anything like I had seen before. We’ve gotten a bit of an origin story before but nothing as long as this. I did like the previous lore of how Leatherface became Leatherface but I was open to something new. For the most part I thought that it was pretty interesting and there was even a decent misdirect but it was the final 25 minutes that I felt dropped the ball. It seemed like it was very wrong and didn’t feel like it was what was what I expected. I was much more expecting something closer to what was talked about before (a disease that Leatherface contracted) and we only got a reveal of the traditional version of the character in the last few minutes. It was a bit of a disappointment to be perfectly honest and I really hoped for something more. The film was terrible by any means but it lacked that certain edge that usual TCM films have. It’s an interesting take on the Leatherface origin but big fans of the franchise may have issues with the execution (pun intended). 6/10

Special Features:

Behind the Bloody Mask: Making Leatherface – A pretty decent feature that includes BTS footage and interviews with the cast and crew.

Deleted Scenes – About 20 minutes of scenes that also include an alternate opening and ending.

Feature with Alternate Ending – This is basically if you want to watch the entire film with the alternate ending included.

Leatherface is available NOW on Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate
