The Movie:

An update to the 1989 classic film KICKBOXER, KICKBOXER: VENGEANCE follows the story of Kurt Sloane (Alain Moussi), who travels to Thailand to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of Tong Po (Dave Bautista). Kurt trains with the legendary Master Durand (Jean-Claude Van Damme) until he is ready to take on Tong Po in a brutal fight to the death.

Nothing can top or will ever top the original Kickboxer but I think that it was about time that this movie was remake or reimagined. The plot for the most part has stayed the same and I’m actually happy about that in this case. Kurt Sloane’s story was the driving force of the original and made it so engaging to me. The acting was pretty bad in the movie BUT I thought the fight scenes were pretty great so it kind of made up for it. The fact the Van Damme was included as Master Durand was a nice touch and I’m glad that they at least had that link to the original. I liked Bautista as the new Tong Po. He was very intimidating and commanding on screen but at the same time his acting wasn’t the best though. That was kind of the pattern with the movie, on the surface it was a fantastic remake but so long as there wasn’t much dialogue going on. The action scenes are really what made the movie what it was and I thought they were choreographed nicely. If you were a fan of the original then you’ll definitely have fun watching the film but if you’re going in to it blind then you may think that this is no better than any other martial arts film. Either way I do suggest at least checking it out. 6/10
