Cake: Blu-ray Review

The Movie:

Claire Bennett (Jennifer Aniston) who initiates a dubious relationship with a widower (Sam Worthington) while confronting fantastical hallucinations of his dead wife (Anna Kendrick). With her feisty housekeeper-cum-caretaker (Adriana Barraza) ever at her side, Claire searches for human connection and self-forgiveness in this tale of personal redemption.

I had heard about this film a while back and thought it sounded intriguing so of course I wanted to see what it was all about. This film touches on a lot of subjects like addiction, loss and finding your way. Each thing is just a piece of a puzzle that takes Aniston’s character to a breaking point and then back to start. I was blown away by Aniston’s performance. She sheds all the glamour and gets down to business. She lays out every emotion that one could go through and does it in such a powerful way. I don’t think that I can recall her ever playing a role quite like this and I must say that it is definitely refreshing. It grabbed a hold of me from the very beginning and had me interested to see exactly what kind of path Claire was going to go down. Worthington balanced out the dreariness when it called for it and also created a moments for the characters to just reflect but the main focus of the supporting cast goes to Barraza. Her character is the glue to Claire’s life that is falling apart and is a complete sweetheart that really does care for her. The film is so honest, true and I really do feel like it should’ve garnered Aniston an Oscar nomination at least. It’s unfortunate because this is a really great film that may be a bit surprising to some but I totally recommend. Go watch it NOW! 9/10
