The Boondocks – The Complete Fourth Season: DVD Review

I’ve always heard of The Boondocks but I never got around to checking it out so I thought this would be the perfect chance to feed my curiosity. The one thing that people had always told me about the show was how crude and politically incorrect it could be and boy were they right. The stereotypical jokes are promoted in a satirical way where you don’t feel like an absolutely horrible person for laughing a bit. I was also surprised to see that there was a bit of political commentary in it as well but it isn’t overly preachy about it to the point that it makes me want to skip ahead in the DVD. One of my favorite episodes has to be “Breaking Granddad”. Granddad finds a way to create a new hair product and gets in business with the wrong people. He then has to “cook” up more product so the ending of the episode is almost exactly like the ending to the first episode of Breaking Bad. It’s shot for shot extremely similar even down to standing outside of an RV in a pair of tighty whiteys in the middle of the desert. I couldn’t help but crack up at the sight of that. Because of the “Uncut and Uncensored” aspect of this release they REALLY let the language fly. I’m by no means a prude when it comes to graphic language but the use of the N-word is all over this season. I understand the context in which it’s used in the show but it makes cringe every time I hear it. The visual aspect of the show is amazingly done. The animation is probably some of the best that I’ve seen in a non-action kind of show in a long while. It definitely has anime tendencies including the occasional fast cuts and quick moments of action and I think that’s what grabbed my attention initially. This season has a total of 10 episodes which are about 22 minutes each. That means that you can actually get through it in one day if you really wanted to and not feel like it’s a chore to do so. It’s a funny show that is not your traditional kind of comedy but does have a place with an audience. It’s unfortunate that this is apparently the final season….unless it finds a place somewhere else eventually like some other shows do but if this might be up your alley then this is a definitely pick this up.

Special Features:

Boondocks Beats – Music composers Jonathan Jackson and Metaphor The Great speak on the score of the show and how they were able to throw in hip-hop and some other musical genres that they weren’t really familiar with before.

A Writer’s Perspective – Executive producer and head writer Rodney Barnes talks a bit about working on the show and bringing something that really hasn’t been seen on TV before to the table.

The Boondocks: The Complete Fourth Season is available NOW on DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
