Dragons – Riders Of Berk Part 1 & 2: DVD Review

Taking place after the events of the film How To Train Your Dragon this set of DVD’s complete the whole first season of the show. Part 1 consists of 11 episodes and Part 2 consists of the remaining 9 episodes. Hiccup and Toothless work together to face new threats and take on new challenges all while dealing with trying to train new dragons at the newly created Dragon Training Academy. To take on a review for an animated show I did what I usually do: I sat down with my 3 year old son and had him watch it with me. We watched and we watched and we watched and when I thought he was getting tired of it he would say “No! I want to watch the dragons!” then we would watch some more. I use him for these type of reviews for the simple fact that if it can be engaging enough to get my son to sit still and be completely mesmerized by it then this is a great show. I think the thing that really caught his eye were the dragons themselves and the fact that they were creatures he had never seen before. I wouldn’t be surprised if he adds this to his stack of daily watch DVDs. In my opinion in the initial episodes the writing was a bit off (I think this was just due to the show trying to find its “legs” so to speak) but as the season progressed the storytelling got better and better and by the end of the season it ended up being a pretty solid show that I think any kid could follow. I loved the fact that most of the voice actors from the film returned for the show. Most of the time you’ll find that it isn’t usually the case (particularly due to budget reasons) but the ones that didn’t return you could barely tell due to the fantastic voice casting. I thought one of the interesting things about these releases was the Dragon Tracker that was included in each DVD. They give information on each of the new dragons showcased on the show and lets you get to know them a bit better. If you (or your children) loved How To Train Your Dragon then this will be a must have and this will help you get caught up for season 2 that’s just around the corner.
