The Movie:

As Hitler’s forces storm across the European landscape and close in on the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) is elected the new Prime Minister. With his party questioning his every move, and King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) skeptical of his new political leader, it is up to Churchill to lead his nation and protect them from the most dangerous threat ever seen.

This was one film that I had heard so much about from various people so this was definitely on my radar. The story is really interesting and right from the start my take on it was that this movie feels like it could be watched right after you see Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. It really does seem like the missing piece to that narrative and would totally be great for a double feature. The biggest treat is without a doubt the performance of Oldman as Churchill. I honestly couldn’t even tell that it was him even though I knew that, in fact, it was him. He completely and utterly embodied Churchill to the point that I forgot that I was watching a movie. Everything about him exuded Churchill and nobody other than Oldman could’ve pulled it off and he did it fantastically. Now, this movie may not be for everyone seeing as there really isn’t any action and it is somewhat of a “slow burn” kind of story but it’s a great watch for lovers of history. This definitely gets a recommendation from me and you’ll easily see why Oldman has been critically praised. 8/10
