The Movie:

It seemed like a great idea when all-around nice guy Max (Anton Yelchin) and his beautiful girlfriend, Evelyn (Ashley Greene) moved in together. But when Evelyn turns out to be a controlling, manipulative nightmare, Max knows it’s time to call it quits. There’s just one problem: he’s terrified of breaking up with her. Fate steps in when Evelyn is the victim of a fatal, freak accident, leaving Max single and ready to mingle. Just as Max is thinking about moving on with what could be his dream girl, Olivia (Alexandra Daddario) – Evelyn has returned from the grave and is determined to get her boyfriend back…even if that means transforming him into one of the undead.

I’ve been a Joe Dante fan since I was a kid and I don’t think I’ve seen a film of his that I haven’t liked. Naturally when there’s a new film from one of my favorite directors I can get a little nervous for the simple fact that sometimes a director’s style can change. Thankfully (I was crossing my fingers beforehand) this isn’t the case and Dante gives another film that, I feel, will become a classic. So many people have dabbled in the zombie genre but this sets itself apart from all the others because it just pure fun. It doesn’t go by the typical “zombie rules” so don’t expect any of the scenarios that you’ve seen before which is actually refreshing to see. There have been other films in the past that have tried to take this approach but were unable to still make the movie fun and I think that’s what it takes if you’re going to create something unique from an already established idea. Yelchin was fantastic in the film and with a character like Greene’s in the mix you really felt bad for the guy. Greene was so good at being the horrible girlfriend. She was so good that when she dies in the film I didn’t feel that bad because they wrote her character so well. Daddario is one of my favorite actresses right now. She’s plays the love interest in the film but she does it so endearing and quirky that you can’t help but just melt when she comes on screen. It doesn’t hurt that she’s beautiful either. Usually I’m a “one view” kind of guy with movies but I honestly felt like I could sit and watch it multiple times…..it’s just that much fun! 9/10
