The Movie:

Left to survive in a post-World War society, two mercenary soldiers – Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos – are sent on a mission on the outskirts of their war-torn city. During the operation, they run into Iris and Olson, two citizens from the utopian city of Olympus, who might have a way to save the world but the ruthless Talos and the scheming warlord Two Horns have their own plans. It’s up to Deunan and Briareos to safeguard their newfound contacts and help save humanity’s last hope.

I’m a huge fan of the anime so I got pretty giddy when I saw that they were releasing this film. With CG animation being so advanced now, Appleseed Alpha is a such a beautifully created piece of work. I don’t think I’ve seen a feature film quite like this in some time. Sure the Final Fantasy and Resident Evil CG films looked great but this really is leading the pack in presentation. It’s gorgeous environments and intricate cyborgs and robots make me feel like I’m watching something out of Metal Gear Solid. The voice acting is outstanding! None of it sounds forced nor does it come across sounding weird like it sometimes does. It all ready sounds and feels like a full fledged live film. The action scenes are something you could honestly compare to some of your favorite action movies. Yes, they’re that good! The story is solid and fulfills your expectations of what you would expect from an Appleseed film. It’s not overly cluttered with storyline aspects but it’s just complicated enough to grab you and keep you thinking and remembering how things end up in the other films. If you’re a lover of the original anime I can guarantee you that you won’t be disappointed at what you’ll see on the screen and you won’t want it to end. Just an FYI, there’s a cool little scene after the credits that I think people will dig. Pick this one up for sure!
