The wait is finally over and your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be swinging into your homes November 9th on Blu-Ray 3D/Blu-Ray/DVD!
The Film:
I reviewed the film itself a few months ago. You can check out what I thought HERE
The 3D:
The 3D Blu-ray transfer is pretty spot on. My biggest problem is watching movies that overly depend on 3D as a gimmick of sorts and that’s when it starts getting silly. This wasn’t the case with ASM, the 3D elements we’re all there and looked great. You could see the obvious depth between the characters and the backgrounds and the action sequences themselves in 3D were a thing of beauty. The best and probably most important thing was that I didn’t feel like everything was being pushed at my face and I DID NOT walk away with a 3D headache (Yeah, I just made that up). It was pretty fantastic and done for all the right reasons. Kudos!
The Amazing Spider-Man Second Screen App:
This was a great way of bringing the audience into the film itself and having them be a part of the whole process. This app (which is available for iPad, Sony Tablet S, or Sony Xperia Tablet S) let’s you basically sync up the movie with the app itself and follow along. You can also “sling” content from your tablet to your TV screen! Now that was something that was impressive and it did it pretty seamlessly. There’s also a production mode that will let you access storyboards, 3D models and featurettes that can be played on your TV screen as well. When (yes, I said WHEN) you pick up The Amazing Spider-Man I suggest you take advantage of this FREE download and submerse yourself in all things Spidey.
The Special Features:
Rite of Passage: The Amazing Spider-Man Reborn – I suggest that if you are a Spidey fan then DO NOT watch these Making Of featurettes individually. Trust me. You are definitely going to use that PLAY ALL option because this documentary is provides a great in-depth and informative look at everything that went into creating Spider-Man again from the ground up including some really cool early screen tests with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.
Pre-Visualization Sequences – It’s interesting to see the storyboards and test CG for certain scenes in the movie. A lot of the art is fantastic and they way the camera moves around to simulate a camera shot gives you same feel as if you’re watching the movie itself. Just without actors moving……or color……or sound…haha. The CG test sequences are cool to see also. If gives an “unpolished” look at some of the effects in the movie so the director gets an idea of what the scene will look like. Another great feature.
Deleted Scenes -Some of the deleted scenes are just alternate takes or scenes that are a bit longer than the ones in the final cut of the film. It’s one of those things that after watching them you can respect and understand the director’s decision to cut certain aspects out to keep the film rolling along smoothly.
Image Progression Reels – This was REALLY cool! Sony Pictures Imageworks gives a closer look at the process of the CG scenes in the movie. They basically give you a step by step progression from Pre-Vis all the way to the finished product. You see how they layer the skin and muscle movement on the Lizard and also how they create Spider-Man webswinging thoughout New York City.
Stunt Rehearsals – The stunt men on this film are amazing! This feature shows them testing certain stunts and doing mock-ups of certain scenes. These guys are really the unsung heroes of the movie business. They make the movie seem that much more realistic and the actors themselves look good. I especially liked the way they edited the scenes together just like you would a real film.
The Oscorp Archives – Production Art Gallery – Gives a glimpse at concept art for the film. It shows early art tests for Spider-Man and The Lizard with some being exceptionally awesome and others being so so weird. I’m glad they made the right choices with the designs they picked.
Commentary – Probably one of my favorite things about home entertainment releases is hearing the directors’ take on the film making process. Marc Webb along with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach were pretty in depth about the whole thing and it’s always fun to hear about stories from the set or about the casting process.
After giving you a FULL rundown of The Amazing Spider-Man 3D Blu-ray release hopefully this gives you all the info you need to make your choice. Basically you only have one: BUY IT! It really is a great film and the features are just icing on the already delicious cake.
