The Movie:
It has been 15 years since the original H.G. Wells Martian invasion. Fearing another attack, the human race has prepared itself. This is the story of the battle tripod ‘Goliath’ and its young crew. ‘Goliath’ is the vanguard of an army of steam-powered battle walkers, heat-ray biplanes, and armored zeppelins facing a Martian fleet of giant fighting machines and flying wings. Within the cockpit of ‘Goliath’, courage under fire, conflicted loyalties and the struggle to save earth, in this new War of the Worlds.
I couldn’t help but to be curious about this film. War of the Worlds was always one of my favorite stories from H.G. Wells so when I heard that this animated movie was being released and that it was basically a sequel then I knew that I had to check it out. Not to mention that Kevin Eastman (co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) serves as Executive Producer. The story is a solid one that had me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Now the only thing that was a bit weird was the fact that this takes place (more or less) around the year 1914 yet they have developed these big mechanical robots to fight against the Martian invaders. I mean I know it’s just fantasy but it was a bit much. Once you try to forget about that fact the rest of the film is extremely enjoyable. Even the parts with Theodore Roosevelt being shown gunning down some of the alien aircrafts got me pumped up. This is far from being an anime film but the landscapes and scenery is done beautifully. The animation reminds me of a Saturday morning cartoon but a lot more mature. It especially shows when characters get disintegrated by the Martians and it goes through layers of the person. You see the person get hit, melt to bone then see the bone fade away into dust. From an animated standpoint it looked really good! If you’re looking for a good sci-fi adventure with a U.S. President going Rambo on some aliens then you gotta pick this up.
The 3D:
Animated films always look great in 3D. This one was just the same. I feel like they have the formula down good enough to give audiences a quality home 3D experience and it didn’t disappoint. The depth of the scenery compared to what was coming forward in the foreground looked great and the Martian machines that walk throughout the city looked like they were about to come through my T.V. screen. The only thing that I did notice was the colors seemed to dim a bit more than the regular 2D version but if those technicalities don’t bother you then you won’t really be able to tell the difference.
