The Movie:
Since she was a little girl, Amy (Amy Schumer) has been taught that monogamy isn’t realistic. Now a magazine writer, Amy lives by that credo, enjoying an uninhibited life free from stifling, boring romantic commitment. But when she finds herself starting to fall for the subject of a new article she’s writing, a charming and successful sports doctor (Bill Hader), Amy starts to wonder if other grown-ups, including this guy who really seems to like her, might be onto something.
I will be the first to admit that I’m not really a fan of Schumer. Shocking, I know. Her comedy acts just really weren’t my cup of tea and as the movie started it felt like exactly that. It seemed like it was a bit that she was doing instead of an actual movie but as it went on it seemed like it course corrected itself. I found myself laughing more and more as the movie went on but more so at the other characters. For instance, John Cena was a big surprise and extremely funny as this was a big departure from what people know him as. Throughout the film Schumer began to grow on me more and more but there were certain dips in her character’s personality that I didn’t dig. Either way I liked her a lot more than what I did initially. Hader is hilarious as usual with his deadpan delivery but at the same time it always seems like he’s going to break character which is even funnier. Shockingly the one person that kind of stole the show was Lebron James. Yeah, you read that right. Although he isn’t the strongest actor just yet he gave a performance that felt the most grounded and real for the situation that was going on. The story, in my opinion, wasn’t the best but it was enjoyable. It just seems like the typical love story that There was a point close to the third act where I became uninterested most likely due to acting not feeling genuine BUT that was probably the only moment that happened. I really was pleasantly surprised at how funny this movie ended up being and if you are into Amy Schumer and her humor then you’ll love this film and if you aren’t then you might find yourself laughing at something you didn’t expect to. 8/10
