They Came Together: Blu-ray Review
The Movie:
When Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler) meet, it’s hate at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie shop. Plus, Joel is hung up on his sexy ex. But amazingly, they fall in love, until they break up about two thirds of the way through.
I saw the cover of this film and with me being a big fan of both Poehler and Rudd I couldn’t wait to pop this in. Then I read that it was basically a spoof of romantic comedies and it kind of took me down a notch. I’m not really a fan of the spoof genre of movies. At times they can be a bit overwhelming with the type of jokes they throw out for laughs and that can make me become uninterested. The movie started out very normal with the two leads explaining to another couple how they met with the film basically being a complete flashback and then the spoof moments started and I quickly realized the feel of the film. It basically took every single cliche from every romantic comedy and threw it in the film but in a way that didn’t make it absurd and it was so damn great. With the majority of the movie being a flashback then it was easily excusable for the silliness because they would try to explain how the beginning of their relationship was like a romantic comedy. Rudd is fantastic as per usual and has a leading man quality to him yet he is not scared to make fun of himself or become characters that are completely left field which makes him great in pretty much everything he does. Poehler has gone from a comedic actress that wasn’t getting her fair share of attention to leading one of the funniest shows on TV and she does exactly what she’s best at…..being so awkwardly hilarious. The other surprising thing is the large cast of supporting actors in the film. With the likes of Cobie Smulders, Christopher Meloni, Max Greenfield, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Ed Helms, Michael Ian Black and so many others, you know you’ll end up laughing immensely. Honestly, you may be a bit confused when you initially start watching the film but trust me, stay with it, because you’ll soon see that this is one of the most clever films in a while. This is a must buy for any comedy fan and trust me, it won’t disappoint one bit.
