The Movie:
When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will use any means necessary to get what she has.
Nicolas Winding Refn has given us some fantastic films in the past. Films that were visually stunning and really got you thinking. This film was the exact same thing. The plot was something very basic with the idea of a young girl running off to L.A. to become a model but Refn takes that and gives this really interesting narrative. It gives us a dramatic look at what happens to Jesse and her story of being engulfed by the modeling industry. She goes through this transformation throughout the film that causes her to become very self centered and cold which starts to rub the already jealous people around her the wrong way. The most interesting and impressive thing about the film however is how quickly it went from a drama into a full on horror movie. There was tons and tons of blood and an underlying message to everything that lead to that point which actually made a whole lot of sense. This film was shot wonderfully! Every scene looked beautiful and the use of certain colors and camera angles really made this film feel like more of an experience than anything. If you aren’t a huge film buff then you may not totally get the movie and might even think it’s weird so that might be a bad thing for the casual movie goer but if you’re a cinephile then I think that you’ll be able to appreciate it just a bit more. 8/10
