The Movie:

Francisca (Kika Magalhaes) must cope with an unspeakable trauma caused by a visitor who shatters her family’s utopia. In the brutal aftermath of the unexpected visitor, Francisca clings to her reticent father in the most unusual ways to fulfill her loneliness. With a lack of connection to the world, the tragedy and teachings from her surgeon mother lead to very dark desires and curiosities on those she keeps sheltered on her secluded farmhouse.

This was a very weird and interesting film to watch but all in a good way though. I was immediately surprised to see that this film was done in complete black and white. You don’t see that very often anymore so when it does happen it feels like I’m being presented with a treat as crazy as it sounds. Pretty much right away we are given a scene that will establish the whole film and it’s rather shocking but in the most subdued way which is odd. The rest of the film is much like that as well with these very calm moments then a bullet point to shock you which will keep you on your toes. The other interesting thing is the editing. The movie isn’t overly gory or anything but with help of some really good editing it leaves certain things to your imagination and if you’re anything like I am then you know that sometimes it can be scarier than what you see on screen. The film doesn’t hold your hand at all and it leaves you with little nuggets of information that makes you formulate what had just happened. The one area that I felt the movie lacked was with the ending. It was totally a realistic end but yet at the same time for the sake of it being a film it felt very uneventful. I think there could’ve at least a bit more added to the climax to the film to give it that “shock” moment that we had been getting throughout the film. Other than that I thought the film was clever, unique and one that will surprise you. 7/10
