The Blackcoat’s Daughter: Blu-ray Review

The Movie:

Beautiful and haunted Joan (Emma Roberts) makes a bloody and determined pilgrimage across a frozen landscape toward a prestigious all-girls prep school, where Rose (Lucy Boynton) and Kat (Kiernan Shipka) find themselves stranded after their parents mysteriously fail to retrieve them for winter break. As Joan gets closer, Rose watches in horror while Kat suffers terrifying visions and becomes possessed by an unseen force.

The first thing that I’ll say is that this is definitely a unique type of horror movie. There’s a slow burn to it that makes it reminiscent of classic horror films but with a nice modern twist. There’s a mystery that plays out through the film and the creepiness of it all is the enticing thing that kept me wanting to find out more. That’s also the bad thing about this film. It literally leaves you wanting more and ends fairly abruptly which is a bit disappointing. Other than that it’s a strong film with a strong cast that gave really good performances with Shipka being the standout in my opinion. The movie isn’t my absolute favorite but it isn’t bad either. I just think that it’ll take a certain type of moviegoer to appreciate it a whole lot more. Do I recommend it? Of course! Especially if you’re looking for something that isn’t like your typical horror movie. 7/10
