Season Review:
Usually a show that replaces its lead character has the audience kind of reluctant to return to the it but with Spartacus (and the unfortunate events with original Spartacus Andy Whitfield) I think a lot of people were curious as to how the series was going to continue. Much to everyone’s surprise Liam McIntyre‘s Spartacus was quite good and he brought forth the same power to the character. Spartacus himself had a transformation this season with him now being a leader of a group of rebels and going through the struggle of having them work together. The one thing that bothered me with the previous seasons and still stands is the use of cuss words. Something about it just bothers me and it sometimes feels like it was a bit too much. Although, the season didn’t feel entirely strong to me the character development was something that I really enjoyed. The transition of Gaius Claudius Glaber to become Vengeance’s bad guy was done really well. He started out the season seemingly like a pushover but by the second half of the season he was in full on antagonist mode. The relationship between (the returned) Lucretia and Ilithyia was a lot of fun to watch as well. Each kept a close tab on each other and plotted/schemed against one another the whole way. The season had its positives and negatives but it really ended on a great spectacular note as Spartacus and Glaber came head to head. The blood. The violence. It was fantastic!
Special Features:
Starz Studios: ‘Spartacus: Vengeance – A brief preview of what’s to come in this season of Spartacus with a rundown of recurring characters and the fresh faces including Liam McIntyre.
The Making of ‘Spartacus: Vengeance – A look at the Special FX of Spartacus Vengeance which to me was really short and could’ve been lengthened a bit.
Behind the Camera: Directing the Rebellion – A small featurette showing how they directed certain VFX scenes in the show. Also could have been longer.
On Set with Liam McIntyre – Gives us an introduction to Liam McIntyre as Spartacus and shows all the prep work that went into becoming the gladiator.
Burning Down the House: The VFX of Episode 205 – VFX Supervisor Charlie McClellan explains what went into making the VFX for the episode “Libertus”
The Legend of Spartacus – Historians Jeffrey Stevens and Aaron Irvin speak about the mythos of Spartacus.
Famous Last Words – Shows the certain members of the cast giving their final words before their characters get killed.
Bloopers – A pretty entertaining gag reel that provides a good balance with the seriousness of the show.
Spartacus: War of the Damned’ Teaser – A small look at the final season of Spartacus.
Bottom line, this bluray is a must for any lover of the show. The book style casing looks really good and the slip cover holds it closed nicely. All of the features seemed a bit short but that doesn’t take anything away from show itself.
