The Movie:
Set in a world 10 years into the general collapse of society, The Rover follows hardened loner Eric (Guy Pearce) as he travels the desolate towns and roads of the outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car, they leave behind a wounded Rey (Robert Pattinson). Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him.
I remember seeing the trailer for this film and thought to myself “Damn, this looks pretty good” and I’m a fan of Guy Pearce already so it didn’t take too much convincing for me to watch this and you throw a “realistic” end of civilization spin on things and there’s not doubt that I’m going to check this out. The movie started out very calm and didn’t focus on what caused the end of civilization, instead it was about a car. The entire movie I sat and every time something crazy would happen the question I would ask myself was “All this for a car?!”. It’s very much a revenge film but without the specific reason upfront and because of that it takes you on a journey that keeps you asking “Why?”. In a film that raises a lot of questions I was hooked because there was something about the relentlessness of the main character that made me know that it was bound to come full circle at one point and it definitely did. Pearce is such a fantastic actor that has gotten even better over time. He gave such a commanding performance and had a calm intensity throughout the film that you couldn’t help but have your eyes glued to the screen the entire time. Pattinson played a character that was left field for him and was a pleasant surprise. His thick accent was a bit overkill in my opinion but his performance made me completely forget about him once being a sparkly vampire. I thought he did a great job at taking on an unconventional role with no glamor to it whatsoever. When you think post apocalyptic you automatically think desolation and this film definitely has that. It’s an actual believable look to the film that they place in front of us that I would actually expect it to be like if a situation like that were to occur. *Slight Spoiler Alert* The most clever thing came at the end of the film and a revelation that happens that makes you understand the title of the film 10 times more. I this is a film that I highly recommend to everyone. It’s a bit different than what you may have seen before but it’s that exact reason why people should check this out.
