The Movie:
The world is bright and everything seems possible for Richard Karlsen (Jack Reynor), the golden boy of his privileged set of Dublin teens, until he does something that destroys it all and shatters the lives of the people closest to him. Featuring extraordinary performances from its largely young cast, What Richard Did is a quietly devastating study of a boy confronting the gap between who he thought he was and who he proves to be.
The very simple and minimal DVD cover just has the feeling like something really bad is going to happen. The moment that this film starts it just feels so real. It doesn’t feel like a movie at all. The way that the characters interact with each other is so natural and real. It honestly seems like they took a camera and started to film a group of teens candidly. As the film moves along you start to have this anticipation of what could or might happen and then it does…….and you’re left saying “oh wow”. It really does start to become a tale of morality and shows you that one reckless act can effect everyone around you. From there you see things unfold in a way that you may not expect and the film becomes less about resolution and more about being a fly on the way of a devastating moment. The film ends on a moment that may leave some scratching their heads but once you let it sink in you’ll be able to figure out why. Yes, it’s one of those films. It’s not an “In your face” kind of movie but it is one that will make you think about the things that you do in your every day life. This is a must see!
