The Movie:
Industrious high school senior Vee (Emma Roberts) is tired of living life on the sidelines. Pressured by friends to join the popular online game Nerve, Vee teams up with a sly and charming competitor (Dave Franco) for just one dare in what seems like harmless fun. But as Vee is caught up in the thrill of the adrenaline-fueled competition, the game takes a sinister turn with increasingly dangerous acts, leading Vee into a high-stakes finale that will determine her entire future.
The premise to this film is extremely interesting right from the start. The question that it poses is: Will you play the game for fame, money or the thrill? That is the kind of thing that intrigues me about it. In a world where everyone is about social media and how many “likes” or “follows” someone can get this film takes that and applies it in a way that makes it an action packed thrill ride the whole way through. There’s also a nice twist towards the third act of the film that changes the stakes and makes it a much more dangerous game than what it already was. Roberts and Franco were pretty fun to watch and their chemistry was great as well. Watching them run around and going on a wild goose chase was super entertaining and it didn’t stop until the end. Machine Gun Kelly even impressed me with his acting ability considering that he wasn’t in it too much. The film was really fun and I definitely think that it has an interesting message if you really pay attention. Would this movie appeal to everyone? Probably not. In fact it may only get the attention of the “social media generation” but in the end that’s kind of who this is marketed for anyway. Either way this is worth a viewing if you’re in the mood for a fast paced, non-stop movie. 7/10
