My All American: Blu-ray Review
The Movie:
Although deemed too small as an athlete, Freddie (Finn Wittrock) dreams of playing football and brings a fight to the game that is noticed by legendary coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart), leading to a scholarship to play college football. With dedication and grueling practices, a victorious season is within reach, but Freddie then receives a shocking diagnosis and discovers what it truly means to have the heart of a champion.
Freddie Steinmark was a man that I knew nothing about. I had never heard of this story and I’m not a huge fan of sports movies yet I was extremely intrigued by watching the trailer just once. The film gives you a great look at Steinmark and just how much he excels at football. It’s his passion of the sport and his determination that drove the film the entire way through. It truly took you on a journey of hope, heartbreak then ultimate inspiration and I couldn’t help but shed a tear for a man as brave as he was. Wittrock surprised me immensely with his performance. I will admit that it was initially hard to imagine him as anyone else other than his American Horror Story character but eventually that passed. After a while I couldn’t tell where Wittrock began or ended and all I saw was Freddie Steinmark. Eckhart was great in the film as well. He played a fantastic leadership role in the film and did it in a way that had a layer of compassion to it. There was one particular scene in the third act that Eckhart truly shined. He gave a very emotional speech that showed his range and just how powerful simple words can be. This isn’t the best sports drama out there but without a doubt I would recommend picking this up but be warned that your eyes may sweat a bit. 8/10
