The Movie:
Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain) is an Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before becoming a target of the FBI. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba), who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.
This story is one that I only heard very vaguely about but after seeing this film my mind was completely blown at just how crazy it was. The complexity of it all was so attention grabbing and seeing the way the story played out had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. As I watched the film I couldn’t help but keep my attention on the screen every time Chastain (as Molly) would explain the logistics and skill of poker games. It was truly fascinating to me. I think the thing that surprised me the most out of it was the fact that there were so many big named celebrities that were involved (none named however) and how it was so intricately planned. Chastain was great in her performance. Her portrayal of Molly Bloom and the way she played it was absolutely perfect. Her narration of the events that took place were great as well. I know some people may feel like her monotone way of describing the events was bland but I looked it as a person that knew so much of what she was doing that it was just something normal and typical to her. Definitely one of the most intriguing and interesting dramas that I’ve seen in a good while. This totally gets a recommendation from me without a doubt. 9/10
