The Movie:

Madea and her friend Eileen (Anna Maria Horsford) have decided to pay a surprise Christmas visit to Eileen’s daughter, Lacey (Tika Sumpter). But the surprise is on them when they discover lacey has secretly married, and her oddball in-laws (Larry the Cable Guy and Kathy Najimy) are Eileen’s worst nightmare! With everyone’s tinsel in a tangle, Madea must use everyone’s tinsel in a tangle, Madea must use her wickedly funny wiles to top a family feud and restore the holiday cheer.

Tyler Perry’s films aren’t horrible by any means but they were just never my thing. With this being the holidays and all I figured I would give this Christmas movie a shot. Surprisingly enough, this film’s premise isn’t really Christmas oriented. Yes, it takes place during the holidays but it doesn’t have the usual Christmas story to it, instead it’s more of a racial theme with one of the main characters of the film being married to a white man and her mother not digging it at all. It’s a bit of a role reversal in what we’ve seen in movies in the past and that made it rather refreshing. There’s also a sub-story present that finds the group fighting a company that threatens to cut off water flow to the town via a dam. It sounds a bit much for a film that’s titled A Madea Christmas and it kind of is but it still doesn’t take away from it being entertaining. The jokes aren’t “fall on the floor” funny but they will produce some good chuckles. I think at this point Perry can afford to take chances and I think that’s what he did with this film. He didn’t necessarily knock it out of the park but I thought it was good enough to get by. I’m still somewhat disappointed that there wasn’t a verbal beating between Madea and Santa Claus which I think would’ve been funny as hell. Although this probably isn’t Perry’s best entry it still is rather entertaining and worth checking out if you’ve seen his previous films.
