Season Overview:

In her new role as a CIA station chief, Carrie (Claire Danes) convinces Saul (Mandy Patinkin) and Quinn to help her hunt down one of the world’s most dangerous terrorists. But when Carrie recruits a young Pakistani as an asset, the lines between right and wrong blur and the operation spins out of control. Facing unclear loyalties at every turn, Carrie must take extreme measures, and risk everything to protect her country.

I can honestly say that I wasn’t entirely sure how this show was going to continue without one of its central characters so for the first few episodes all I did was sit back with my hands crossed and think to myself “Let’s see how they’re going to pull this off”. To my surprise they did it really well. It was a really ballsy move to reinvent the show they way they did but it seems to be working just fine. They took Carrie and expanded her world so much to the point where it felt like I was watching a totally different show. The paranoia in this season runs rampant with the trust level between characters being practically zero which makes for some great moments. With paranoia being the main aspect of the season we also get to see Carrie slowly go through a mental break. It’s rather upsetting watching her go through it. She initially has no connection to her child and at one point even tries to drown her baby. Even though that scene happened rather quickly I couldn’t believe that the show went there. Thankfully the show didn’t actually GO there but after that you truly feel horrible for her. The season finale was great but didn’t end on the usual surprising cliffhanger which at first was a bit strange to me BUT after sitting on it for a day I realized that it was the perfect kind of ending for this season. With it being a season of reinvention it needed to show a hint of the future and what could be. I wasn’t disappointed with this season one bit even though it seemed like a big departure so if you’re a fan of the last 3 seasons don’t let the absence of certain characters sway you to not watch it. It’s a great show that had me guessing the entire way and I’m really looking forward to what this series has in store. 8/10
