Hercules: Blu-ray Review
The Movie:
Have a mighty fun time with HERCULES, Disney’s animated classic from the creators of ALADDIN and THE LITTLE MERMAID. Nominated for an Academy Award(R) (Best Music, Original Song, “Go The Distance,” 1997), this legendary family favorite is packed with colossal laughs and nonstop adventure. Taken from the gods as a newborn and adopted on Earth, Hercules is just an awkward pillar of strength trying to fit in. What he wants most is to impress his father Zeus. When Hercules discovers Hades’ sinister plot to take over Mount Olympus, he goes from zero to hero and, with the help of his pals Pegasus and Phil, discovers that real strength comes from the heart!
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 17 years since this movie first came out yet I remember it just like yesterday. I’ve come across people over the years that have absolutely hated it and then others that have absolutely loved it. The reason I loved this film so much was because it involved two of my favorite things: Disney and Greek Mythology. The thing that made this animated film stand out be so unique was the style of the animation. Yes, it’s the usual old school animation but it was done in a way that stays true to the architecture and sculptures in Greek history. Every character looks like they were inspired by art and sculptures that you would find in a museum. The story is a slightly different take on what we usual know of Hercules but it’s not a huge departure which is nice. The songs in the film are so great and experiencing them again after so many years was definitely a treat. I forgot how much I liked “Go The Distance” and “Zero To Hero”. I’ve now had those songs embedded in brain for the past week or so. The film looks amazingly beautiful on Blu-ray. Experiencing it in 1080p on a 240mhz screen really does breathe new life into it. The colors pop so much and look great BUT I did notice a few inconsistencies in some of the coloring. There were moments that a scene would flip and the coloring in some of the characters in the background would go dull. It wouldn’t be anything that anyone would notice unless you are paying super close attention. It definitely won’t affect your enjoyment of the movie at all. If you’re looking to beef up your Disney collection then you CANNOT miss picking this up.
