The Movie:
The film follows Miguel (Michael Peña), a hardworking father and devoted husband who crosses the border illegally and is wrongfully accused of murdering the wife (Amy Madigan) of a former sheriff (Ed Harris). Miguel’s pregnant wife (Eva Longoria) lands in the hands of corrupt Mexican “Coyote” smugglers as she tries to help her husband, while the ex-lawman investigates his wife’s death and unearths evidence that could destroy one family’s future.
There aren’t a lot of films out there that include the topic of illegal immigrants in a way that doesn’t seem overly stereotypical or politically incorrect. This is one that takes the topic of immigration and instead of preaching about it, it makes a compelling film about the wrongfully accused while sending a message. The film is a drama but it keeps you at the edge of your seat like any thriller would because of the unraveling of the truth that begins to happen. Michael Pena gives such an awesome performance and shows just how much of a powerful actor he has become. Harris is such a strong actor as well and is the perfect person to lead the film’s story along with his presence and demeanor. I thought one of the best things was that Pena and Harris’ characters don’t really converse much due to the language barrier (and the actual situation) but they each were able to convey their message without having to say too much to one another. I haven’t seen Longoria in a role such as this before. The situation that she ends up in will make you feel so much for her character but the saddest part is that it actually happens to people in real life. This film is one that everyone needs to see and will have you invested in the story completely all the way until the final second. Pick this up and you definitely won’t be disappointed.
