Season Overview:
Season three opens seven months after the 2nd Mass arrived in Charleston. Tom has been elected as a political official of Charleston, but he has his hands full as the resistance continues to battle the alien invaders. The newly formed alliance Tom formed with a new alien race gains them their first real advantage in the war against the invading Espheni.
I’ve been waiting quite some time to catch up with the crew from the 2nd Mass and to find out what happens next after the crazy 2nd season. I’m usually skeptical when it comes to shows that jump forward in time in between seasons because it can sometimes mean they were just looking for a way to start fresh without doing a continuation type of season premiere. The time jump works here though. I think that there is so much going on and only 10 episodes to do it in that they had to find some way to progress the story and get right into it. The story with the Espheni has gotten a lot more interesting with the inclusion of a new alien species named the Volm and their involvement in trying to help the people of the 2nd Mass. From beginning to end I thought it was a pretty solid season that pushes the limits a bit further. The one thing that I did notice was that the progression to the story wasn’t as much as i would’ve liked for it to be. I haven’t entirely decided if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand you don’t want to show all your cards at once but you do also wants to have viewers feel satisfied. I attribute it to it being a 10 episode season and not allowing for a slower build up. Don’t get me wrong though, I thoroughly enjoyed the season and the payoff at the end was good as a season finale (it had me talking to the TV screen saying “I knew it!!”) and made me want more Falling Skies so I consider that a win for the show. The only thing that I don’t want to happen is to go too off track of the Espheni battle just for the sake of trying to keep the show different or new every season. This show is somewhat similar to the way The Walking Dead is but in this case the Skitter battle is one that NEEDS to stay in the forefront.
Special Features:
2nd Watch: Hosted By Wil Wheaton – An after-show for the series that digs a bit deeper with group interviews with the actors on the show.
Warrior Poet: Creating The Character And Emotion Of Cochise – An in depth look at how they developed the newly introduced alien warrior of the show.
Karen: The Overlord Next Door – A feature on the antagonist of the series so far. This makes me appreciate Schram and he acting ability but it also reminds me how much I despise Karen.
Behind The Scenes – 6 quick BTS features that give a look at the making of the show and some of the characters involved.
