The Movie:
Uptight Jason (Zac Efron) is a week away from marrying his boss’s daughter. But everything changes when Jason’s fooled into driving his foul-mouthed, free-living granddad (Robert De Niro) to Florida for spring break-and thrown into a series of frat parties, bar fights, and epic misdeeds on a road trip that gives new meaning to family bonding.
Raunchy road trip comedies are a guilty pleasure of mine. For the most part they aren’t the best movies out there but they do the trick as far as entertainment goes. This movie was a lot of that same thing. The whole plot was pretty predictable and it was obvious where the film was going to end up at but I must’ve watched it on a good day because I thought it was kind of funny. There were moments that had me chuckling mainly because I’m a fan of a good amount of the actors involved and some of the gags were good enough for me to let out a guffaw here and there. That was the best part of it. Other than that it felt like an 80’s film without the same appeal. Even though there were jokes that “hit” there were a lot of others that fell flat and that hurt the film in my opinion. De Niro performed great as usual but there were times where I couldn’t help but think that such a legendary actor has resorted to drug and dirty jokes. Efron is the kind of actor that I would expect that from and to be honest it suits him a bit better than De Niro. It just seemed fairly awkward. Like I implied earlier, the film isn’t all bad and it’s fairly entertaining I just wish it would’ve had jokes that were executed better. I would say to pick this up if you’re looking for a movie that doesn’t require you to think and if you’re looking for a unique comedic experience then this mot likely won’t be for you. 6/10
