Season Overview:
As Defiance’s second action-packed season begins, the lives of the townspeople remain in turmoil as Nolan (Grant Bowler) searches for Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), Amanda (Julie Benz) deals with a personal loss and Stahma (Jaime Murray) plots to take over Datak’s criminal empire. Meanwhile, Earth Republic’s control of Defiance brings changes with far-reaching consequences, including a scheming new mayor (James Murray) whose secret agendas push the town towards its breaking point.
I’m a newbie when it comes to this show so I had to do a bit of binge watching in order to catch up to this season but I’m glad to say that I was successful! SyFy Channel has been knocking it out of the park recently with their original programming and it looks like we’ll be seeing more Defiance in the future. This show initially reminded me a lot of another alien invasion show on another channel ::cough:: Falling Skies on TNT ::cough:: but this season especially has branched off more and really found it’s legs as an interesting and highly addictive science fiction T.V. show. The season didn’t start off hitting the ground running but instead took a slow and steady pace that I felt was perfect for the story. There’s plenty of mystery and double crossing going on as the season progresses which is the aspect that made it so addicting . Without giving too much away you are given a story arc that shows someone extremely close to Nolan become his greatest threat and those are always the most intriguing to me. It’s funny to me because I remember seeing Grant Bowler in Ugly Betty a few years ago and for him to go from that to something as action packed as this is a huge departure but a very welcome one. The Votan Collective aren’t the typical alien race. Instead they look very human like but with milky white skin and long hair. They’re very creepy, almost like albino hippies or something along those lines. The show has its flaws here and there but they are so miniscule that I wouldn’t see it hurting the series one bit. I actually had a lot of fun watching this show even though it has a vaguely similar story and I dare you to not get hooked to it right away.
Special Features:
Season One Alternate Ending – This ending to the first season wasn’t as good as i thought it was going to be and I’m glad they kept what they showed on the show.
Deleted Scenes – An awesome amount of scenes that are spread throughout the 3 discs in the season. Some are pretty good but others are better left on the cutting room floor.
Gag Reel – I wasn’t exactly sure how funny this was going to be given that some of the actors seem so serious but it was actually pretty hilarious…..with lots of bleeps.
Defiance: The Lost Ones Minisodes – 5 shorts that bridge the gap between season 1 and season 2.
Jesse Does Defiance – Jesse Rath takes us on a behind the scenes journey of the show with some appearances here and there from the cast and crew.
