Daredevil – Season 1: Review
Matt Murdock is an attorney, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but imbued with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.
I’m just going to start off by saying that this show will be completely different than what you expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s dark, gritty (we all know those words will be used by everyone), action packed and is a lot more violent than anything we’ve seen from Marvel. There’s blood and lots of it but it’s shown only during fight scenes for the most part (give or take a few other instances) so I think they were able to get around showing as much as they did because of not being so graphic. There’s also a bit of language in it which was surprising as well. I like the fact that it does take place in the MCU but there is little to no mention besides one or two instances and other implied moments of the other superheroes. It stays really grounded and that is perfect for this show for at least one season. There isn’t any super powered villains running around just yet which makes it even more grounded than Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel set out to create a show about a street level hero that completely separates itself from the likes of The Avengers and they accomplished that fantastically.They serve up Daredevil to us in a Batman-like fashion but without all the tech gear which I think will make him identifiable with a lot more people and the red suit reveal is pretty damn cool. The show as a whole takes a little while to build up some steam but when it does you start to find more about Matt Murdock and his inner struggles as well as a surprising look at Wilson Fisk’s beginnings. Cox is nothing short of amazing as Murdock but I have to admit that I was skeptical about just how good he was going to be. When he’s in costume he definitely has the “hero look” and when he speaks about wanting to help Hell’s Kitchen you can hear the sincerity in his voice. D’Onofrio embodies everything that the Kingpin is but also portrays him with a lot more humanity than how we are used to seeing him. He’s just as ruthless though. With this being Marvel’s first dip into Netflix territory I think a lot was riding on the success of the show and they’ve most certainly proved that they got it right once again. The hardest thing to accept about the show is that once you’re done binge watching the season then you have to wait that much longer for another one but now that I think about it……it was so worth it. 10/10
