The Movie:
A Dog’s Purpose shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love.
I’ll preface this review by saying that I’m not really much of an animal person at all BUT I do have a conscious and I do have a heart so I will be honest and say that I was already hating this movie. Not because I felt like it was going to be a bad movie or anything. It was mainly because I knew it was going to make my eyes sweat (aka crying….lol). The family decided to get together and give it a shot. Not more than 10 minutes in and my daughter was crying her out out. This kind of thing continued throughout the entire film and I don’t blame her for it one bit. They did a great job at pulling on your heartstrings and Gad was fantastic at giving the dog a personality. I think the best thing about this film is that it can be looked at from many different angles. It’s the story of a dog’s journey through life but we could apply the same journey to people as well and gives us a look at the good times as well as the bad/heartbreaking times. My only complaint about the film was that I wish there was more time spent with Bailey and Ethan story and certain aspects were elaborated on a bit. Other than that I thought that it was a cute film that, although rushed at times, had a good overall narrative. This is a definite pick up for everyone but animal lovers will love this one for sure. 7/10
Special Features:
Deleted Scenes – There are a good number of scenes here that pretty good to check out but don’t really offer much more to the story so it’s understandable why they were cut.
Outtakes – Some funny moments that include dog training, green screen moments and more.
Lights, Camera, Woof! – A really interesting Making Of feature that has a dog guiding the audience through all aspects of creation of the film.
A Writer’s Purpose – This focuses on the creation of the story and the author’s experiences in crafting it.
