The Movie:

The story of how Spartan king Leonidas led an extremely small army of Greek Soldiers (300 of them his personal body guards from Sparta) to hold off an invading Persian army now thought to have numbered 250,000. The actual heroism of those who stood (and ultimately died) with Leonidas helped shape the course of Western Civilization, allowing the Greek city states time to organize an army which repelled the Persians.

If you’re a part of a younger generation then you’ll see this with a confused look. Mainly because the only 300 Spartans that you remember were the stylized and male model-looking ones from Zack Snyder’s 2006 film. This in fact is where Frank Miller (the author of the source material Snyder used) gained a lot of his inspiration from. The film was such a treat to experience and kudos to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment for bringing these classics to the forefront for newer audiences to see. If you’re a hardcore lover of film then you’ll love checking this out but be warned that given the time that it was made it’s light on the action and heavy on the dialogue. According to the versions of this story that I’ve heard and read, the film seems to cover most of the main points which is good to know that they adapted some of the actual material. The acting isn’t the best but it also isn’t the worst. I tried to put myself out of the box and enjoy the film as someone would back in ’62 to just take in the performances and that actually made me appreciate it a lot more. If you’re looking to add an awesome classic film to your collection and at the same time educate yourself (and others) on cinema of the past then this is the one for you.

The 300 Spartans is available NOW on Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
