Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club: DVD Review

The Single Moms Club

When five struggling single moms put aside their differences to form a support group, they find inspiration and laughter in their new sisterhood, and help each other overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. Written and Directed by Tyler Perry.

The movie: The story of a single mother is one that can’t be easily told but Tyler Perry does give us a good view into the daily struggles. Five women find a common bond, all single moms trying to raise their kids the best way they can. May (Nia Long), Jan (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Hilary (Amy Smart), Esperanza (Zulay Henao) and Lytia (Cocoa Brown) finds themselves forming a friendship and helping each other establish parental sanity. I could relate to this movie as I once was in the shoes of these women. I liked the movie, but it definitely had its cheesy moments. I’m all up for women coming together and helping one another, but these were once complete strangers now trusting one another with their children?! A smidge far fetched. Nonetheless, I really enjoy Tyler Perry and his many films. He has a way to bring so much truth into each of his projects that you can’t help but appreciate. There were definitely some feel good moments as well as some very real moments as well. I enjoyed the movie. As a parent, I can relate. As a women, I can appreciate.

My Likes: The diversity in the characters was something I enjoyed. I also loved the actresses themselves. It was such a great mix of women that helped add more dimension to the film. I also really liked that the idea of a single mom wasn’t the stereotypical one. Every story is different for every women and the movie gave us a view of five different scenarios. I also appreciated that the movie didn’t really go into detail in showing the typical deadbeat dad.

My Dislikes: Perhaps one thing was the ability of these women to just become instant friends in days. I don’t know about you, but I’m not quick to just be friends with anyone. Much less be friends and let you take care of my kids! I know, its a movie, but if the movie was really trying to show us the story of single moms, AS single moms we wouldn’t trust this easily.

Special Features:

“The Single Moms Sisterhood” featurette: A great insight of all the women in this film. I always appreciate these type of features that gives you a better understanding into each character/actor and how it all came together for this film.

“The Mens Club” featurette: Even though the movie was centered around the women, the men do have a vital part in giving these women a bit of sanity. Tyler Perry addresses the male’s role in this film as well as each of the actors give their feedback on each character they portrayed.
