The Movie:

After journalist Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) is fired from The New York Times for embellishing a story, he learns that accused murderer Christian Longo (James Franco) has been claiming to be him. Hoping this story will save his career, Finkel begins interviewing Longo in prison. But soon, the men find themselves in an eerie game of cat and mouse.

Most people (me included) will see this film and the cast involved and make the assumption that this is a comedy of sorts. This film isn’t anywhere near that genre at all. Not even one bit. Franco and Hill are part of a comedic “Rat Pack” but are the only two that have managed to cross back and forth between comedy and drama. In this film they stretch their dramatic chops in this crime thriller. The only thing is the crime has already been committed so as an audience it gives you something that unfolds somewhat like the crime investigative shows on TV. It did such a great job at giving you little details here and there at a time and even when it all is on the table you still are back and forth in your mind as to who is actually innocent. On the other hand the story preliminary story that Hill is a part of creates a perfect amount of doubt in the viewers’ mind. It’s genius and a great nail biter even though there isn’t any action which I feel like is a hard task to accomplish. Both of these actors have proven that they can do a little bit of everything and I really did enjoy every bit of this movie. There are a tiny bit of slow points that I felt could’ve been trimmed here and there but nothing too drastic. Films like this don’t come around very often but are very much worth checking out so I suggest you do so. 8/10
