Tom Holland’s Twisted Tales: DVD Review
The Movie:
Horror legend Tom Holland dares you to join him for nine nerve-shredding, totally Twisted Tales. Serving up a mind-bending assortment of the macabre, it’s an anthology fine-tuned to keep you on the edge of your seat. A new drug offers users a glimpse of the future… with beastly consequences. A murderous husband is stalked by his own cell phone. A jilted lover wreaks satanic vengeance. The nightmarish action then leads to worlds haunted by dark magic, demonic possession, vampires, witches and more in this seriously freaky festival of fear.
I love all kinds of movies but first and foremost I’m a lover of horror. Some of my favorite horror films were anthologies like Creepshow, Tales From The Darkside and in the most recent years, V/H/S so I jumped at the chance of checking this out. If you all didn’t know, Holland has written a few of my horror favorites of the 80’s and 90’s like Child’s Play, Fright Night and Thinner so that made this even more inviting. This anthology is a collection of 10 shorts that in all honesty are pretty low budget and sometimes cheesy but it’s the actual stories that really had me sold. For the most part they were pretty unique and imaginative with interesting concepts. If given a bigger budget and maybe a few different actors (I’m going to be vague here) then I think it would’ve been improved A LOT. There were some shorts that stood out more than others. One of them was actually the very first one of the bunch “Fred and His GPS”. It’s a story about a man that kills his wife and in his attempt to flee he starts to believe that his GPS is taunting him. It’s not anything that I’ve seen before but I just wish it was a bit longer. There were plenty of other avenues (pun intended) that the story could’ve taken to be more fulfilling in the end. One of the ones I wasn’t really fond of was “Cached” that was basically about a ghost in a stolen iPad that haunts whoever picks it up. The dialogue wasn’t the best and some of the situations just weren’t believable (well as believable as they can get). The thing that I did enjoy the whole way through was Holland’s introductions of each short which made it feel kind of old school. There was something comforting about that. Out of all of the shorts included I would say that if you’re a horror fan then you’ll dig at least 85% of them. They aren’t Creepshow level but they are good in their own right and I think there will definitely be an audience for it. If you get a chance I would say to give this a viewing.
