The Movie:

A group of researchers led by Frank (Mark Duplass) and his fiancée Zoe (Olivia Wilde) have achieved the unimaginable: bringing the dead back to life. When Zoe is accidentally electrocuted in a horrific accident, Frank and his team use their experimental serum to resurrect her. But their attempt goes horribly wrong—unleashing terrifying powers within Zoe that put all of their lives in grave danger.

I’ve seen just about every zombie movie there is so when I saw the trailer for this film I initially thought that this would be just another one of those films that was a “brand new take” on the undead movie. That wasn’t the case though. In fact it went completely “left field” than the route I thought it was going to take. I liked the fact that they took the attractive woman and made her the villain of the film instead of being the typical eye candy. I’m a big fan of Wilde and it was nice to see her in something a bit different. There were some good jump scares that got me pretty good but I think part of it was caused by the audio being amplified in certain spots. There was moments involving a psychotic dog that had my wife telling the TV “Hellllll Nooo!” (she’s terrified of dogs) that was quite creepy. Evan Peters and Donald Glover are both in the film but I feel like their talents were wasted on the bit parts that they played. I thought the film had an attention grabbing premise and as the story played out it had me on the edge of my seat. It was the final scene in the film that fell flat for me. What they did with it was unnecessary and it would’ve been much better if they faded to black about 6 minutes prior. The film itself, I thought, was a great, creepy, date night kind of movie. It wasn’t a horrifying film but it was entertaining for what it was so I do suggest picking this one up. 7/10

Special Features:

Creating Fear: The Making of The Lazarus Effect – The usual promo for the film with cast interview snippets and clips from the film.

Playing God: The Moral Dilemma – Interview snippets that feature the topic of whether or not someone would bring another person back to life if it was possible.

Deleted and Extended Scenes – There are a few scenes here that are good but don’t provide any more to the movie so I can see how they were cut.

The Lazarus Effect is available NOW on Blu-ray and DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
