The Movie:

Kaulder (Vin Diesel) is an immortal witch hunter who has spent centuries tracking down those who practice evil magic. When history’s deadliest witches resurrect their bloodthirsty Queen Witch, Kaulder becomes humanity’s last hope as he clashes with the supernatural in an epic battle for the ages.

Diesel was coming off a strong showing in Fast and Furious 7 and when this movie was announced it left a lot of people (me included) scratching their heads. A movie like this is definitely one that I can say is unique for Diesel who has somewhat coasted his way through with all the Furious films so to be perfectly honest THAT was the one thing that grabbed my attention about it. I really liked the mystical/supernatural aspect a lot and the demons/creatures were designed impressively cool. It almost reminded me of Constantine a whole lot which I liked. Do I buy Diesel as a witch hunter? Not entirely. There are moments when he was looking like a Viking that I said “Ok, this seems pretty new and interesting.” but other than that it just kind of felt like Dominic Toretto hacking away at demons with a sword. The story is somewhat predictable BUT the film is really entertaining with all of the action sequences and the over the top effects. With that being said, it seems like they are trying to make this a franchise and to be honest I hope that they don’t. It’s good enough to be a standalone movie, anything more than that will teeter the line of it being overkill. For sure I thought it was going to be something similar to Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and I’m so extremely happy that it wasn’t. If you’re looking for a good action movie without having to think too much about the plot then this is perfect film to lay on the couch with. 7/10
