The Gunman: Blu-ray Review
The Movie:
It has been eight years since Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) worked as a black-ops assassin and now someone from his old organization wants him dead. Pursued across Africa and Europe by a team of elite hit men, Terrier is dragged back into his dangerous past as he engages in a relentless cat-and-mouse game to take out the man who betrayed him.
I feel like a movie like this is in the spotlight because of the success of Taken. That movie blew the doors open for these sort of action movies to come back to the forefront. We even saw another attempt with Kevin Costner earlier this year as well. Not to say those kind of movies are bad because in the end I actually enjoyed them but with Sean Penn being the face of this film it just kind of makes me feel complacent about it all. The film wasn’t bad itself and the story seemed predictable yet very action packed with little slow down. The thing that felt generic was the casting of Penn himself. It felt like they were trying REALLY hard to establish Penn as a new action star much like Neeson became. The thing with him is that the fight scenes were very hard hitting and impressive but his facial expressions didn’t match the action. He was very plain as far as his reactions to the fight scenes which looked really weird. It looked like the light was on in the house but no one was home. Story wise I thought it was perfectly fine and was a thrill ride the entire way through. Idris Elba and Javier Bardem were also in the film but their talents felt wasted as they were only in a handful of scenes. In the end these kind of movies are enjoyable either way but I just hope that we won’t see a sequel with Penn. 6/10
