The Movie:

A warm, winning road-trip movie that follows journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) as he interviews legendary author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), The End of the Tour explores friendship, fame, and creative rivalry through two people on a journey that is as moving as it is unforgettable.

I absolutely love it when a film completely surprises the hell out of me. I honestly had never heard of this movie but the fact that Segal and Eisenberg were leading it I was intrigued. I’ve spoke in the past about Eisenberg always playing Eisenberg in every film that he’s in and even though it was basically the same thing there was another layer to his performance that felt different and fresh. It felt like there was a lot more emotion to his character than usual as you see this interviewer begin to become friends with a writer that he had just met. Segal has showed that he can branch out and do a little more drama all while still bringing the humor when needed. The movie lacks big story moments and that may make some people want to steer clear of it but in all honesty those moments aren’t really needed. The most interesting parts of the film are when Lipsky and Wallace are just having philosophical conversations about life and society. Those are the moments that make the movie great and meaningful. While the movie is very inspiring in moments there are also times where you can see Wallace very emotionally sensitive and that can sometimes lead to depression which he suffered from off and on throughout his life. I felt like it foreshadowed what was to come for him and that made it really sad towards the end of the film. Although they didn’t delve into the sadder moments very much it did showcase the development of a close friendship that Lipsky didn’t think would even happen which gave a fantastic conclusion to the story and film. This was a nice little gem that might’ve otherwise flown under the radar so I will recommend checking this out if you can. 8/10

Special Features:

Behind the Tour – A really good and lengthy Making Of feature that shows BTS footage as well as interviews with the cast.

A Conversation with Composer Danny Elfman – A neat little feature with the legendary composer about certain moments in the film.

Deleted Scenes – Only a few scenes here that aren’t too bad but don’t really offer too much extra.

Audio Commentary with Director James Ponsoldt, Writer Donald Margulies and Actor Jason Segel
