The Movie:

Luke Skywalker’s peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy.

This movie is a bit of a tricky one to review. The only reason I say that is that I’ve gotten blasted by two different kinds of people in doing so. Those that loved the movie and those that absolutely hated it. I honestly fall somewhere in the middle. The world of Star Wars has always been something that I always gravitated to so I love it and know it well. Now with that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie when I initially saw it. It felt like a full on space fantasy film with all the little nuances and creatures you would find in a Star Wars movie that we all know and love. I loved the aspect of Kylo Ren basically being the Yin to Rey’s Yang and each of their frustrations that come from that. Now on the flip side of things, after really taking the film in as a whole I couldn’t help but point out the things that could’ve been done differently or the bad decisions that were made in terms of character development. It really is unfortunate because I do feel like there was a good chunk of story that still needed to be explored and addressed. Sure, there are some things that can possibly be retracted but there are others that, if they tried, would just upset more people. The film was very enjoyable but it did mess with the lore in a way that could hurt the franchise moving forward. 6/10

Special Features:

The Director and the Jedi – A really fantastic full length documentary (1hr 30min) that shows Rian Johnson’s experience on the film. I do have to say that while the film has gotten a lot of negative reviews, if you watch the documentary it may leave you with a different attitude towards the film and Johnson himself. I really do sympathize with him and his journey on making the film but I do stand by my opinions on it. This is a MUST WATCH if you’re a Star Wars fan. There’s a lot of great info and behind the scenes footage here.

Balance of the Force – Johnson talks a bit about the major story elements in the film and certain character’s motivations throughout the movie.

Scene Breakdowns – A very thorough look at a few key scenes from the film.

Andy Serkis Live! (One Night Only) – A fantastic look at the great Andy Serkis and his motion capture performance as Snoke in a key scene in the film.

Deleted Scenes – A good amount of scenes here that I do admit, should’ve been included in the film. Well the majority of the scenes anyway.
