Star Trek Into Darkness: Review
When a terrorist attack on Starfleet’s secret installation Section 31 is committed by former Starfleet agent John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), it sends the academy into high alert. The crew of the U.S.S Enterprise is dispatched to retrieve Harrison after he flees to the Klingon homeworld of Kronos. After a confrontation with a group of Klingons, Harrison quickly (and strangely) surrenders to Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew but it starts to unravel that Harrison has a bigger plan in mind…….but so does another member of Starfleet.

J.J Abrams has done a pretty bang up job (besides over-use of lens flares) at breathing new life into the Star Trek franchise so when this new entry was announced I was immediately excited. I was also very happy to see that the whole cast returned. This bunch was cast precisely and stayed true to the original characters. The inclusion of Admiral Alexander Marcus (Peter Weller), who is the father of Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) was a great addition as well. He added mixture of a protagonist and an antagonist. I did love the fact that they hid Khan under the name John Harrison. It was a good little swerve although I think the reveal could’ve had more of an impact than what they showed. There were PLENTY of easter eggs in this film. Some stemming from the prequel comic “Countdown Into Darkness” and some from previous Star Trek history. There are a few that are pretty obvious like the Tribble that McCoy (Karl Urban) has in his Sickbay and some were less than obvious like the classic “Amok Time” fight music that was snuck in from the original series. If you are a hardcore Trekkie then I’m sure you’ll get most of the “nods” that they included. This film pretty much had the same feel as the previous one but throughout I felt like it lacked something but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then it hit me, it lacked its big movie resolution. The fight between Khan and Spock (Zachary Quinto) was a good one but it wasn’t an extravagant fight sequence or there wasn’t an epic starship battle. All it felt like was a mediocre ending to an extra long T. V. show episode. The role reversal between Kirk and Spock was a fresh twist to a known story piece but Spock’s “Khaaaaan!” didn’t have the same feel as the classic line was once delivered. It was a great movie, I just think that it lacked a few things here and there. Hopefully the next one (if there is a next one) will have more of an epic story rather than having things thrown in just to make familiar appearances.
