The Movie:

After breaking out of prison, Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor), Australia’s most notorious criminal, enlists 19-year-old JR (Brenton Thwaites) to accompany him and his crew on a gold heist that promises to deliver millions. However, as things start to go wrong, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

The film starts off as a prison story that I honestly thought would take up most of the film and from there it leads right into a “man on the run” film with tendencies of a heist film and twists and turns along the entire way. McGregor is without a doubt the stand out performer here. His character has this way about him that is quiet yet kind of intense. There are certain scenes where you see him and you get the feeling that even though he is so calm that he could snap at any moment. Thwaites was surprisingly great as well. I really wasn’t aware of his work at all but I was impressed at how he stood toe to toe with all the other actors in the film. He has this timidness about him that comes across as strange at first but it certainly works for this film as it lets him fly under the radar and not seem too threatening. The film was a bit slow in some parts but mostly held a steady pace that had consistent tension throughout. I like that it had a clear cut ending and didn’t try to throw out any sort of twist. It was a satisfying one that gave some hope for the main character which doesn’t happen as often with these kind of films. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re into crime capers or heist type films. 7/10
