The Movie:

In the aftermath of the shocking events of Sinister, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and her nine-year-old twin sons (Robert Daniel Sloan and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves marked for death in a rural house as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity.

We all know that sequels of horror films aren’t usually superior to their predecessors but I liked the first Sinister so much that I HAD to give this a chance. There isn’t much character connectivity to the original film besides the inclusion of the Sheriff Deputy who is now a private investigator following the events of the first film. This isn’t a horrible film but I feel like it falls in the “It tried a little too hard” category. I liked the overall premise of the film but I felt like relying too much on the ghost children this time around was a bad idea. It sent the film down this really cheesy rabbit hole that it never came back from. I like the fact that they showed a bit more of the home movies which is something that I dug from the original movie but it could’ve gone without trying to explain so much of the lore behind Bughuul. I think it’s better if it stayed somewhat mysterious on that front. I was kind of hoping that we would get a bit more Bughuul but it seems like that character is just a puppet master of sorts and only appears when it’s absolutely necessary which isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes less is more. The film however did have some pretty good jumpscares and that made for some really fun viewing with my wife. I thought James Ransone was great and managed to combine seriousness and comedic performances throughout the film. I don’t usually like comedy in a straight horror film but with his almost deadpan responses it made for some really good moments. Not to mention that he’s just as scared of investigating what’s going on as anyone else would be. So, again, this wasn’t a horrible film but it did lack the things that the original brought to the table. With that being said I would say go ahead and give it a viewing but maybe a digital rental would be the safer bet first. 6/10

Special Features:

Deleted Scenes – Although these scenes are interesting they don’t add too much more to the film so I can understand why they were cut.

Time To Watch Another: The Making Of Sinister 2 – A pretty good feature that includes interviews with the cast and crew.

Extended Kill Films – These were pretty cool to watch and gave you a full viewing of the home movies that were created in the film.

Feature Commentary With Director Ciaran Foy

Sinister 2 is available January 12th on Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment
