The Movie:

The New Founders of America invite you to celebrate your annual right to Purge. The Purge: Anarchy takes it to the streets for the country’s yearly 12 hours of anarchy, when all crime is legal. This new story follows an unlikely group of five strangers over the course of the night. As they fight to survive a night fraught with impossible decisions, these strangers will find out just how far they will go to protect themselves and, ultimately, each other.

The Purge was a unique idea that I thought was pretty great. The thing about that film was that as good as it was it just kept reminding me of The Strangers. The premise on the other hand was fantastic so when the sequel was announced I was clamoring to see what they were going to come up with next. What we ended up with was a film that I felt surpassed the original and gave it an even more unique and thrilling experience. All I could think during the original film was what was going outside on the streets and that’s exactly we we get to see in this film. Seeing characters out of a single setting is a fantastic change and we actually get introduced to more than one character which adds a bit more depth to the film. I still really would like to see the beginnings of how the annual Purge came about but seeing a bits and pieces of some of the upper class crowd to me was just as satisfying. I liked Frank Grillo‘s hard edged attitude to his character and the entire film I found myself trying to piece together what his intentions were. The only aspect that I wasn’t too fond of was the fact that this film become more of an action film and really felt like it took the horror element out of it. Don’t get me wrong, it was thrilling and such but there was something about the feel of the original that I hoped would’ve transferred over. If they make another sequel (which I’m sure they will) I would like to see some backstory but other than that I do feel like this was a superior film than the original. With the Halloween season in full swing this is a definite pick up.

Special Features:

Deleted Scenes – There are a handful of scenes here that are pretty good, including one that shows the fate of few of the upper class group.

Behind The Anarchy – A decent BTS feature that has the usual cast and crew interviews and deals a lot with the production of the film.

The Purge: Anarchy is available NOW on Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment
