The Movie:

An insurgency of fearsome monsters lord over these regions and threaten humanity. The film follows four fresh army recruits as they embark on a life-altering mission in the Middle East, through the heart of monster territory to save a group of fellow soldiers.

I remember watching the original one on a whim and being blown away by the complexity and originality of it. This film takes those qualities and tries to build on them in a bigger way. With the film taking place in the Middle East it was obvious that they were trying to throw in social commentary into the story but it had little impact unlike what it would be if it was a realistic story of a conflict in that part of the world. I did see what they were trying to do as far as comparing it to the similarities but they could’ve spun something different out of that. The actual creature portions of the film were fantastic and beautifully created. It reminded me a bit of District 9 as well as the cartoon Red Planet but on a bigger scale. These creatures looked so big and unique that they rank up there as my favorite Kaiju. After watching this it really made me want a Cloverfield 2 even more than before now. The film wasn’t as great as I thought it was going to be but it isn’t bad either. I just think it didn’t hit the mark on what they were trying to get across. It is a cool creature film but I wouldn’t call it the best. If you’re into “monster” movies then you might like it but be warned that they aren’t the biggest focus of the film. 6/10
