The Movie:

When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin (Gabriel Bateman), is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out.

Ever since I saw the short film that this was based on I fell in love with the concept but when I head that it was going to be turned into a feature film I was really curious as to how they were going to build a full story surrounding it. Surprisingly they did quite well at doing it and they made it interesting enough to try to figure out why this entity was around. My complaint about the story however is that I didn’t feel like it was paced properly and the revelation of the entity and why it was there was a bit rushed. I LOVED the way they were able to execute the way the entity moved around and traveled. One instance in particular that stuck me as smart was when they tried to shoot it and the blast from the gun was causing it do dodge the bullets because it would disappear. There was some really good thought put into a scene like that and it was definitely appreciated. I do feel like there is more story to tell and normally I’m not a huge fan of sequels but I think they could expand on things greatly if they did one. With the Halloween season in full swing I highly suggest picking this up as it’ll have you creeped out and on the edge of your seat throughout the film. 7/10

Special Features:

Deleted Scenes – 3 scenes here that are fairly decent and they include an alternate conclusion (which wasn’t advertised) but for the most part they were kind of lackluster.

Side Note: I was disappointed with the lack of features. The original short film wasn’t included either.

Lights Out is available Now on Digital HD or October 25th on Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Bros Home Entertainment
