IT’S SO EASY AND OTHER LIES is based on Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan’s New York Times best-selling memoir. The film chronicles Duff’s rise to fame, his near fatal struggles with addiction,  and his remarkable life transformation.
I’ve been a huge Guns N Roses fan for a really long time so I’ve heard all the band stories out there but this is the first time that I’ve seen Duff tell his side in this way. I was impressed at the style of the way that it was all shot. The actual documentary portion of it was shot really well and all the people that were interviewed told some awesome stories and some of those stories I hadn’t heard before. The other portion was the live performance. The only way that I can describe it is a one man show with Duff reading excerpts from his memoir all while being accompanied by a live band that are playing stripped down versions of Guns N Roses songs. It was pretty awesome to see and most likely even better to physically be in the building to experience it. It was a genius way to create an engaging way of storytelling and I couldn’t get enough of it. My only complaint was that it did feel like they skipped across a lot of details and moments. It’s understandable because the film would probably end up being 4 hours BUT I do wish that some other things would’ve been elaborated on. This is easily one of my favorite music documentaries in recent years mainly because of its unique execution and the intimate feel of it. If you’re a GNR fan then this is definitely something that you’ll want to see without a doubt. 8/10
