Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them – and us – on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.

I had the awesome privilege to attend a special screening of The Night Before Our Stars.

Basically I paid to get an early ticket to see the movie, a poster, a charm bracelet, and this great live simulcast at the end of the movie with the top actors. I got one acronym for everyone. OMG. I completely fell in love with this movie. I read the book sometime last year I believe and if you have not, it won’t be the end of the world movie wise. I still suggest to go read the book because John Green is one of my most favorite author everrrrr. I sound like a teenage girl, but this is what John Green does to me! But ok, back to the movie. I don’t want to give you a review with spoilers, but ok after the first 5 minutes into the movie, you know that things won’t end as great as you would like them to. Hazel has cancer. She has been on an uphill battle but has managed to stay strong after coping for many years. By her mother’s request, she attends a support group where in comes her knight in shining armor. Ok, maybe not that fancy, but Gus is the closest I can imagine as a knight! He has to be one of the best male characters for me. He is the epitome of what every teenage girl would want in a boy – sweet, handsome, considerate, and most importantly head over heels in love with you. Gus was played by Ansel Elgort and there is no one else in my mind that could of done what he did. He embodied the character so perfectly that I felt lost in the story as I watched him. Shailene Woodley played Hazel and she was also beyond amazing in this movie. The pair had such a great amount of chemistry that the whole story really felt so real. The situations the two faces were real in fact. When I was in the theater watching the movie, I was surprised at how many people were crying OUTLOUD. I mean there was a girl behind us who had to get consoled by her friend at some point. I immediately just assumed they are being dramatic but my friend made a point, perhaps this movie touched them because they have recently dealt with losing someone to cancer. I guess it was easy for me to write it off because thankfully I have not had to deal with something like this head on, but cancer is a scary disease that many face each day. I did cry though. I can only imagine the pain that people would go through in this type of scenario. I could sympathize with Hazel’s parents because I cannot imagine how it must feel to have your son or daughter endure this type of torment. There was also another great character, Issac (Nat Wolff) who is a friend to Gus and Hazel and faces his own unfortunate circumstance. He was just so adorable. I didn’t even realize until the end of the movie that he and his brother (Alex Wolff) are musicians – we got to see two them perform two songs during the simulcast. Honestly, I could go on about how great this cast was! Laura Dern who placed Frannie (Hazel’s mom) was so lovely. She played an amazing character with such a big heart. I really gravitated to her and I really admired the relationship she shared with Hazel. And her father, Sam Trammell, was the perfect dad. I loved that although he had his moments of being protective of his daughter, he still knew when to loosen up the reigns and let her be. Overall, to give you a review on how great this movie really is will not enough — go read the book people! I remember vividly reading the book and the next day just wanting to be alone because I was so heartbroken. Doesn’t that sound so appealing?! No but really, the best way to describe their love story is a good kind of heartbreak — if that even makes sense. You won’t regret reading any John Green book for that matter! We were able to see John Green in the simulcast and I would love to be friends with guy! He was so funny and down to earth and he reminded me so much of his characters in his previous books. But my recommendation for everyone out there who has stumbled upon my review would be —— go see this movie!
