Disconnect: Blu-ray Review
The Movie:
A hard-working lawyer, attached to his cell phone, can’t find the time to communicate with his family. A couple is drawn into a dangerous situation when their secrets are exposed online. A widowed ex-cop struggles to raise a mischievous son who cyber-bullies a classmate. An ambitious journalist sees a career-making story in a teen that performs on an adult-only site. They are strangers, neighbors and colleagues and their stories collide in this riveting dramatic thriller about ordinary people struggling to connect in today’s wired world.
Movies that have various stories that weave together catch my attention automatically. One with subject matter such as this made this a film I couldn’t ignore. A film like this shows how much technology has changed us as a society in the worst possible way. From people cyber bullying, others becoming online thieves and stealing others information or people taking advantage of one another, the internet has become a place where people do many evil things from behind a keyboard without thinking twice. Each story in the film has a the common thread of something so negative happening but if you pay attention then you’ll see another common bond between them all. They all are about people just looking to make a connection with someone. It’s really pretty sad if you think about it, we are a society that has taken solace in communicating online with others than actually talking to the people right in front of us. Jonah Bobo really shines as a teen being cyber bullied by a pair of students in his school. I felt so bad for his character and practically felt his pain which goes to show how great his performance was. It was refreshing to see Jason Bateman in a non-comedic role and take the reigns of a character that had is not his usual self. I’ve been waiting to see him in something as strong as this because I like to see actors give it their all and he did just that. Alexander Skarsgård and Paula Patton‘s onscreen chemistry is something that you could feel. The distance between them in their relationship felt so real and deeply sad. The circumstances of their issues is definitely something that would cause anyone to be upset and sympathize with the couple. Max Thieriot gave a performance that I didn’t expect from him. He showed just how young men and woman with nowhere to go can get pulled into a life of online exploitation. This was a bit tough to watch because of the subject matter. They didn’t show anything graphic but it was just the fact that you have kids that are 15 years old or so that get convinced to do webcam shows online. The reality of it is that it’s all sadly true but in the end it also shows that the exploitation doesn’t just come from inside the operation. This film is a must watch and makes you think to really communicate more with the people you love and the people around you.
