Dave, a frustrated artist who has yet to accomplish anything significant in his career, builds a fort out of cardboard boxes in his living room, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls and critters of his own creation. Ignoring his warnings, Dave’s girlfriend Annie leads a band of oddball explorers on a rescue mission. Upon entry, they find themselves in an ever-changing supernatural world, threatened by booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur.
I have a big imagination as well as a creative side as well so when I heard about this film I was immediately excited to see it. The plot is very simple and straight to the point but that doesn’t mean that it’s bad at all. In fact, it exceeded my expectations and made me smile and laugh the whole was through. It also had relatable frustrations that creative people endure when going through mental blocks and that made me connect a bit more with Dave as a character. The cast was phenomenal and played off of each other so well. Usually I do tend to have an “MVP” pick when it comes to certain films but I honestly couldn’t pick any particular person. Everyone was so good and you would think that dialogue between people would start to mash together given the amount of people in certain scenes but that wasn’t the case. Everything flowed extremely well and pretty much everyone got there moment to shine. Besides the cast the other impressive part was the sets that were used and created for the movie. I sat there taking it all in with a smile on my face because of the simplicity yet complexity of it all. It’s made to look like anyone could create something like that but the design of certain areas of the labyrinth are so complex that you can easily see that it’s not simple by any means. This movie was such a fun watch and if you’ve ever created a castle or fort (cardboard or pillow) then there’s a really good chance that you’re going to enjoy the hell out of it! 8/10
